Rescued – A Pet Mountain Lion

It is difficult to imagine what it would be like to live in a small captive space for a really long time, Jan knows better than anyone how that feels.

“Jan” is a captive bred female mountain lion. Almost a decade ago she was imported into Thailand with many other mountain lions to be sold to zoos or to become a pet when she was only a cub. She lived in a small cage for more than 7 years prior to being rescued. She is now starting a new chapter of her life at WFFT.

Usually, non-native species are not the main focus of WFFT, but in this case, we had to step in and help this poor soul. WFFT rescued Jan a few months ago, she was placed in our Quarantine Facility to allow her to settle in and give us time to construct a species-specific home for her. Once we were happy she had settled in and she had been given a clear bill of health, she was ready to move into her new home at the brand new WFFT’s Big Cat Rescue Centre last month.

It took Jan a few days to leave the side enclosure to her new home, having spent years locked in a tiny concrete cell, the huge space must have been daunting. Her new home includes grassland, large trees, a pool, soft soil, a cool breeze, and it is completely dark at night. An atmosphere that she has not felt ever in her life. After some time, she started to settle in and began to enjoy her new life here. This was the first time in many years that she felt grass or soil under her feet.

Surprisingly this kind of problem is still occurs, people think that wild animals make good pets, in the case of large predators like Jan this could not be further from the truth. Owners are often attacked and sometimes killed when keeping such animals as pets.

Recently we have seen an increase in unwanted non-native exotic wild animals such as our new world monkeys Max and France. Thailand’s wildlife protection laws only protect native wildlife and some 106 CITES listed non-native species, through the Wild Animal Reservation and Protection Act 2019.

We hope in the near future the new wildlife law will help more non-native species with the highest level of international trade restrictions.

Thank you Mike and Joan for supporting and helping us with Jan’s rescue and the construction of her new home. Without you, this would not have been possible.
