New Arrivals at WFFT: Two African Spurred Tortoises

We’re welcoming two new residents to the sanctuary: a pair of beautiful African Spurred Tortoises, also known as Sulcata tortoises – the third-largest tortoise species in the world.

These tortoises were brought to us after being kept as pets, having originally been purchased for a child. Unfortunately, as is all too common, the novelty quickly wore off, and the animals were no longer wanted.

Their story is a sobering reminder that wild animals should never be treated as novelty pets. Exotic species like these require specialised care, space, and attention – far beyond what most people can provide at home.

Thankfully, their circumstances have changed. Now under the care of our experienced team, the tortoises have received their initial health checks and are settling into a safe, supportive environment where their needs will be properly met. We’re currently awaiting further test results to better assess their long-term care requirements, but for now, they’re doing well and adapting to their new surroundings.

At WFFT, we remain committed to rescuing and rehabilitating animals caught in the exotic pet trade – and to raising awareness about the real consequences of keeping wild animals as pets.

Thank you for supporting our work, and helping us give animals like these a second chance.
