Rescued – Ex- pet Golden Cat

(Scroll down for English)

Keeping any wild animal as a pet can be extremely stressful to the animal due to difficulty in providing a proper environment and a suitable diet.

‘Pu Yai Fai’ a male Asiatic golden cat (Catopuma temminckii) was illegally poached from the wild and spent the first two years of his life in a tiny cage. His owner decided to contact us and ask if we could give Pu Yai Fai a better future.

We agreed and Pu Yai Fai was brought to the WFFT Wildlife Rescue Centre. He was severely malnourished and emaciated when he arrived. After performing an initial health check and profiling his blood, we found that he had heartworm disease.

Golden cat body parts are commonly seen for sale online. Their skin, claws, and teeth are used to make amulets due to cultural beliefs that they possess powerful dark magic. They promise wealth, protection, and even sexual enhancement to those who acquire these amulets. Surprisingly, these exotic charms are very easy to buy on social media even though they are illegal.

After weeks of intensive treatment Pu Yao Fai is improving, he is eating well and his body condition is almost back to normal.

We will keep you posted about his condition.
