Nam Chok has passed away

We are incredibly sad to share the passing of our very special lady, Nam Chok.

When she came to us in 2023, this shy elephant was very thin, blind in one eye, and struggling with digestive issues. Her body was full of scars from the five decades of abuse she had endured as a trekking elephant, and likely a logging elephant too. Her spirit was broken. She was still wearing her riding saddle on the day of her rescue. Despite being freed from chains, she barely moved for days after arriving at our sanctuary.

With time and patience, her quirky and gentle personality began to shine. She discovered her love for swimming, something she did every day, and it was a true joy to witness.

Our vet team was by her side and worked around the clock to make her as comfortable as possible, but age-related illness caught up with Nam Chok, and sadly, we were unable to save her.

We want to say a special thank you to our friend Joan, who made Nam Chok’s rescue possible. She got to experience nearly two years of sanctuary life. We couldn’t have done that without Joan and our amazing supporters who donate to care for rescued wildlife.

We’ll always remember Nam Chok as the quiet and funny girl who liked to stand in her salad bowl, loved her food, and was the most patient elephant ever when receiving veterinary care. We will miss her dearly.

We held a Buddhist ceremony to help guide her passage to the next life. Rest in peace, sweet girl.
