Volunteers Cleaning Bear Enclosure

A few days ago, a group of volunteers cleaned the 8-bear enclosure. This task is only performed once a month which means there was a lot to do!

Everyone grabbed a rake or broom and began clearing away the debris from inside the bears tunnels and trees. It was mostly leaves or dirt with the occasional tyre or ball that had been used to make the bears enrichment in the past – enrichments are small treats hidden away in different objects, creating a fun and interesting way for the animals to ‘hunt’ for their food. Some volunteers even scaled the bears tree structures, all the way to the very top, to sweep away all the dirt.

After a while, neat piles of leaves dotted the enclosure and people began moving them into large wheel barrows. Once full, a few volunteers would haul them out and dump the contents into a compost pile. All the while, the bears watched inquisitively from inside, as their home was given a thorough spring clean.

Although it was a hot day and dust clouds billowed up into everyone’s faces, no one seemed to mind. The volunteers carried out this task with smiles on their faces and determination. Three hours later the enclosure was swept clean from tree top to tunnel and the bears are enjoying their tidy new home.
