Rescued – Small-clawed Otter and Pig-tailed Macaque

(Scroll down for English)

Rescued – Small-clawed Otter and Northern Pig-tailed Macaque

After a few weeks of preparation and the help of some friends of WFFT, on the evening of May 10th we welcomed two special animals. A Northern Pig-tailed Macaque and an Asian Small-Clawed Otter. A friend of WFFT helped transport the animals up to the rescue centre, he had driven over 10 hours from the South of Thailand.

‘Betty’ the Northern Pig-tailed Macaque had been kept inside a tiny metal cage for almost 10 years by the time she was rescued. A concerned member of the public spotted her trapped inside a small cage and noticed she had a large tumour growing under her tail. After purchasing Betty for 4,000 THB from her previous owner, she was taken to a veterinary clinic where a veterinarian was able to safely remove the tumour. We were contacted by Jane Key, a lady who usually rescues dogs but in this instance was trying to help a monkey, she asked if we could provide the macaque with a new home as she needed to be moved out of the vet clinic as soon as possible. Please note that we do not condone paying to rescue wild animals, if you see an animal in need do not try to buy please inform us and the relevant authorities. Buying wildlife to rescue it inadvertently fuels the illegal wildlife trade.

The Asian Small-clawed Otter had been bought through the illegal wildlife trade here in Thailand. The trade in otters is illegal and all species of otter are protected under the Wild Animals Preservation and Protection Act. Despite this, the trade in otters is still flourishing and they are readily available in numerous places throughout the country. Social media platforms have aided the growth of this trade, with otters openly being displayed and sold, with prices sometimes as low as $60.

Currently, WFFT has a long list of otters awaiting rescue. Comprised mostly of former pets whose owners wish to get rid of them due to their aggressive and territorial behaviour, which develops as they reach sexual maturity. We literally cannot keep up with influx of otters that need rescuing. We will be launching a fundraising campaign very soon to enable to rescue the otters that are currently on the waiting list so please keep an eye out.

Keeping any form of wildlife as a pet is aiding in the destruction of natural ecosystems across the globe.

Please do not support wildlife trafficking.
