Working together to help primates

WFFT Joins hands with the Coconut Industry helping out the coconut picking macaques in need of help.

The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) has joined hands with Ampol Food Processing and Theppadungporn Coconut Company to help find a long-term solution for the monkeys used in the coconut picking industry in Southern Thailand, starting on the island of Koh Samui.

WFFT and partners met up with the local community, coconut farmers and owners of coconut picking monkeys (Southern and Northern pig-tailed macaques) to discuss the history of the practice of coconut picking, the current status of the farming and industry and proposed future changes and adjustments.

Many of the farmers explained that although the picking of coconuts by monkeys has been a way of live for generations, they would like to see change to this practice, while explaining that on especially hard to access mountain slopes it would be hard to find alternatives to the practice. They also explained their concern for the monkeys once they retire from the coconut picking as they cannot be released back to the wild, as they are a danger to the local population and cannot defend themselves to any wild specimen due to the lack of canine teeth.

During our visit and discussions, we rescued two macaques that retired, with one needing urgent medical help, that we can provide at our wildlife hospital. They will spend the rest of their lives under our care at our “Monkey Island” project.

Ampol Food and Theppadungporn Coconut will continue providing support to the WFFT projects to increase quality of life of the macaques, find a solution to the problems faced and push for positive change.
