Poppy the Bear Undergoes Surgery

Over the last few months, WFFT staff noticed a swelling on the right eye of one of our Malayan Sun Bears, Poppy. She was given an anaesthetic injection so the Vet Team could complete a general health check and give her right eye an ultrasound.

The result showed that Poppy’s eye had a Squamous Cell Carcinoma. A type of skin cancer that is not fatal, but if left for too long, it can continue to grow, possibly leading to the loss of her eye.
The Vet Team tried to surgically remove the mass from her eye 3 times, but the tumour kept growing back.

Fortunately, last week, WFFT was honoured to have ophthalmologist Dr Wongsuda Yala from Kasetsart University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, come and complete a surgery on Poppy’s eye.

The procedure went well! Poppy is now enjoying food as usual and seems very happy. Over the next 2 weeks, our Vet Team will have to keep a close eye on Poppy to make sure her eye tumour does not return back.
