Joe rescued from a dark hell

(ภาษาไทยด้านล่าง)
Every now and then we might have mixed feelings about our work, ourselves or the world we live in. This last Tuesday was one of those days for me, Edwin, founder of WFFT.
On Sunday evening I received an email from a concerned foreigner who lives in Bangkok. He did find a monkey that lived in a dark and dirty small hole in a slum in Central Bangkok. Without much more information, and not an exact location yet, we had to make an appointment to go and see the poor monkey on Tuesday. Luckily Peter, who found the poor macaque was able to lead me and our team to the monkey and what we found in reality was even worse than the picture we received at first. I have seen a lot of animal suffering in the last 17 years, but I would say that the condition the monkey was kept in was probably in the “top 10” of most horrible cases and when the owner told us how long he had been in there I was absolutely shocked! Joe, as the monkey is called, has been in this hell hole since 1991! That is 25 years… No water to drink, in almost complete darkness, alone, in his own and human dirt, “his world” being only 70x80x80 centimetres for the last 25 years!
After talking with neighbours we found his owner quite quickly and luckily for Joe, he was more than happy to give him up. The owner told us the Bangkok Zoo did come to see him many years ago and would only take him if he, the owner, would pay 100 dollars a month for care to the zoo. Nothing happened since.
Our team quickly went down to work and sedated “Joe” after which we started to tear down his “home”, finding rats and dirt all over. Joe was dirty and very weak, as his cage was so small he could not walk or climb at all and his muscle tissue was almost gone. His teeth were very bad and he was dehydrated. The slum was inaccessible for cars, so we had to carry him out of the slum and visit the local police station to get his rescue registered. Immediately after this we moved Joe to our quarantine unit in Petchburi at WFFT.
I have been calling Thailand my home since 1990, for 26 years. On Tuesday I realised that all that time that I have been living and working in Thailand, this monkey has been in that cage, waiting for someone to rescue him. I just wish we would have known earlier.
Joe has been a few days at WFFT now and is starting to move around his cage. He walks around but is not able to climb yet, too weak and without the experience to do so. Joe was seen taking a bath in his clean water tub yesterday and has been communicating with his neighbours, other monkeys, whom he hasn’t seen for so long. His life expectancy is up to 35 years and we hope he will still have some quality years ahead at our sanctuary.
To get back to my mixed feelings, Tuesday was a day of exactly that. I felt embarrassed to be a human being, seeing what humans again and again do to animals, but at the same time I was feeling proud to be a human, being able to make a positive difference in this horrible case. I am afraid there are more cases to come.
