Finally free after ten years in chains….

Yesterday we received a call about a macaque in need of help, so this morning the WFFT Rescue Team headed out to assess the situation. The macaque in question is ‘Mam’, a 10-year-old adult female long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis), most likely caught from the wild as an infant to be sold as a pet. She has spent the last decade confined to a very short chain outside the home of her keeper. We were asked to help this macaque as the person that was keeping her had recently passed away; she therefore needed a new home.
The long-tailed macaque is listed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species, in view of its wide distribution, presumed large population, tolerance of a broad range of habitats, occurrence in a number of protected areas. Although it is under heavy hunting pressure for the pet trade, meat, sport and trophies, this is not considered a major threat to the species overall. Females are often taken into breeding facilities and males are exported internationally primarily for use in laboratory research. They are regularly persecuted as pests. Habitat loss is also a localised threat, but the species can persist in a variety of habitats and very adaptable.
Mam has been rescued and transported to the WFFT Wildlife Rescue Centre. She is no longer in chains and is currently in our quarantine area adjusting to her new life. We will gradually introduce her into one of our many large macaque groups, in an open field environment, free from pain and misery.

เช้านี้ทีมช่วยเหลือสัตว์ป่าเดินทางไปช่วย “แหม่ม” ลิงแสมที่ถูกล่ามโซ่สั้นๆ ไว้ถึง 10 ปี จนที่รอดถูกบีบรัด และผูกติดไว้นอกบ้าน แต่ตอนนี้แหม่มถูกพามาที่มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าแล้ว เราจะให้แหม่มปรับตัวกับพื้นที่ใหม่สักระยะจึงค่อยย้ายแหม่มไปอยู่รวมกับเพื่อนใหม่บนสนามหญ้ากว้างๆค่ะ
ลิงแสมเป็นสัตว์ป่าที่ IUCN จัดให้อยู่ในอันดับ มีความเสี่ยงต่อการสุญพันธุ์น้อย กระจายพันธุ์ในวงกว้าง มีประชากรจำนวนมากและสามารถปรับตัวได้ดีโดยเฉพาะพื้นที่ในเขตอนุรักษ์ ถึงอย่างนั้นลิงแสมก็จัดเป็นสัตว์ที่ถูกคุกคามอย่างสูง ทั้งการค้าขายเพื่อเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงหรือนำเนื้อมาเป็นอาหาร ถูกนำมาเป็นเบี้ยในเกมส์กีฬา แม้กระทั้งของที่ระลึกที่ทำจากอวัยวะสัตว์ ลิงแสมตัวเมียมักจะถูกนำไปเป็นแม่พันธุ์ ส่วนตัวผู้มักถูกส่งออกไปเป็นตัวทดลองในงานวิจัย อีกทั้งยังสูญเสียถิ่นอาศัยอีก ลิงแสมจึงต้องปรับตัวและยืดหยัดเพื่อมีชีวิตรอดต่อไป แต่หากยังถูกคุกคามเช่นนี้ต่อไปอีก ไม่นานคงต้องจัดอยู่ในกลุ่มใกล้สูญพันธุ์แน่นอน
